THE BEGINNING

In the late 80’s the Mgarr United committee believed that, in order that one day our senior teams could move forward, the club had to have its own football nursery to produce young good players to serve as a supply line for our senior teams.

The late Mr Joe Schembri, at that time Secretary of Mgarr United FC, sent a letter to parents of Mgarr boys in the hope of bringing boys together to set up a nursery. Unfortunately, Mr Schembri’s wish remained just that – a wish.

When in 1992/3 Mr Saviour Caruana and Club President Mr Joe Vella were invited on a sports programme on a local radio station, the former, at that time coach of Mgarr United expressed his strong belief that football in our village could not show any progress unless the club took steps to form a nursery, The task was not an easy one. However, when Mr Caruana approached Mr Paul Vella (member of the Mgarr Local Council in charge of sports) the latter offered immediate and unstinted assistance. A committee was therefore appointed and this was composed of Mr Paul Vella, Mr Saviour Caruana, Mr Robert Vella, Dr A.Chircop, Ms Pawla Grech, and Mr David Said from the Parent Club.

The beginning was hard but the newly formed Committee did not look backwards. After twelve months spent by the committee in settling many issues, in season 1996/97 the nursery started with 60 boys in the Under 10s to Under 16s. The first two coaches were Mr Saviour Caruana and Mr Dorian Law.
