10 Men Mgarr beat Qrendi 1-0

A goal by Chris Abela handed Mgarr United another three important points as they defeated Qrendi 1-0 to move back in 4th place in the table. William Camilleri reported sick in the morning and did not take part in the game while Malcolm Bugeja still recovering from injury. The Blues had the first attempt at goal on the 12th minute with Matthew Muscat trying his luck with a shot from inside the box ending over the bar. Later Mgarr had many occasions to score from Chris Abela, Matthew Muscat and Jeffrey Gauci but all failed to score. The second half it was Mgarr who controlled the match but found the keeper in good form, on the 46th minute Alan Zahra serves Chris Abela whose first time effort was neutralised by the Qrendi keeper. Mgarr continued to hold the initiative and Matthew Muscat once again tried his luck with a long-distance shot ending wide, Chris Abela had two attempts at goal, first with a shot in front of the keeper being turned into a corner and then with a low shot from the edge of the area which was neutralised again by the Keeper.
Substituted Vesko Petrovic also tried his luck from a long-distance but his shot ending wide, minutes later a free-kick taken by Vesko was saved by the keeper. In the 82nd minute Gordon Said picks up a silly red card and will now miss at least two, probably three matches.
Minute later Mgarr took the lead when Matthew Muscat received the ball from the back by Vesko Petrovic and immediately passed to Chris Abela who managed to beat the keeper.
This win put back Mgarr in the 4th position. In another match Mdina defeated Marsa 2-0.

On Sunday leaders Pembroke Athleta returned to winning ways as they registered a comfortable 7-1 win over Marsaskala. Ghaxaq moved back in second place as they beat Xghajra Tornados while Santa Lucia lost 0-1 to Fgura United.
